Access/Equipment: Membership includes access to the boathouse ergometers, weight room, and the club’s fleet of small (1 or 2 person) boats outside of structured practice hours so that members can pursue individual fitness goals as their schedule allows.
Squads: Our team is comprised of 3 squads: Novice, Recreational, and Competitive
Novice Squad:
The Novice squad welcomes any adult rower within their first two years of joining the sport. This group focuses on developing skills to join either our Recreation or Competitive squad. Members of the Novice squad may move to the Recreation or Competitive squad before the end of their novice term with approval of the destination squad coach.
Practices are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 6:00-7:30 and are aimed at developing rowing proficiency and include land and water practices. Novices have access and are encouraged to take advantage of the ergs and weight room outside of regular practice times to achieve individual fitness goals. Novices may opt-in to attend home races at Lake Merced. Coaches are available to meet with participants 1:1 to discuss their rowing progress.
Recreational Squad
The Recreational squad welcomes experienced adult rowers who seek enjoyment and holistic benefits from the sport.
Practices, held Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6:00-7:30 am and blend technique and fitness development in a relaxed setting. While skill development continues, the focus is on the sport's enjoyment and well-being aspects. Members can choose to participate in local races at Lake Merced and coaches are available for individual progress discussions.
Competitive Squad:
The Competitive squad is a dedicated training program for rowers seeking to enhance their physical and technical abilities. The program prioritizes commitment and dedication over prior experience or current fitness levels. Rowers who are committed to improving their competitiveness are welcome to join and may further find themselves within an intermediate or advanced cohort.
Organized practice hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 5:30 to 7:30 am and are structured around the racing schedule and presented at the start of the season. Erging is incorporated into both regular and outside practice sessions. Each rower has 2-3 individual meetings with coaches throughout the season to establish and monitor personal fitness and performance goals.
